Symbol and Process Primitive Scenario Generation (SiPPSiG)

In its simplest form our methodology includes the following steps:

  • First, we compare catalogued sets of diagrammatic symbols (segregated by field of study) to potential target symbols in unknown or partially defined artifacts. Fields of study can include almost any STEM discipline for which standard diagrammatic representation has been established.
  • Second, we compare sequences or groupings of symbols in the artifact (assuming multiple symbols have been identified) to catalogued processes.
  • Third, we look for potential relationships between processes (assuming multiple processes have been identified) within the target artifact.
  • Fourth, we develop a set of potential process scenarios based on the specific field or fields to which the symbols and processes are related.

It is important to note that the identification of symbols and processes in the target artifact is necessarily limited to the symbols and processes which have been previously catalogued. In other words the system may be able to identify portions of a novel or as yet unknown process based on existing fields of study but is incapable of completing or forming opinions about a novel process on its own. Hopefully that day will come soon.

It is also important to note that the methodology may result in false positives in the identification of potential symbols and processes. This is inherent for several reasons and any results obtained through its application should be judged accordingly. The methodology is extremely useful however as a tool for providing direction for the future analysis of artifacts which may have been overlooked or undetected by others.
